Navy Bike Ride 2024

We are thrilled to present the Navy Bike Ride (NBR) 2024. This year’s NBR is open to participants of any age and ability from across the country and the world, as well as sailors deployed around the globe. We come together in the spirit of camaraderie and community to support the men and women who serve.

Four in-person events will take place throughout the month of June in Esquimalt, BC; Ottawa, ON; Québec City, QC; and Halifax, NS.

Two virtual event options are available to those unable to attend in-person to include as many remote riders as possible. This year, you will see the return of our exclusive virtual Admiral’s Challenge in the form of a 100km ride that must be completed in one day.

Registration is now open for all in-person and virtual events. We hope to see you stepping up the challenge where we will ride together as One Navy Strong.

About us

What is the purpose of the Navy Bike Ride?

Founded in 2016, the Navy Bike Ride (NBR) encourages the well-being of our communities and families by motivating each other to be healthy through cycling and raising money for the Canadian Armed Forces Community.

Virtual and in-person engagement has been amazing, with participation coming from all across the country, all working towards the common goal of supporting our Navy community.

With funds raised going to the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund, Support our Troops, and Soldier On, this event continues to solidify an extensive reach and encourage riders from coast-to-coast-to-coast to come together and collectively support such important causes. Every year, we as a community show what we can do as One Navy Strong.

Relationship Between the Royal Canadian Navy and cycling

To many, the connection between the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and cycling may not be an obvious one. Cycling has long been a tradition, as it can be difficult for a sailor to stay in shape when they are deployed onboard a ship for months at a time. Very few warships have a large enough space to dedicate to a gym; however, a stationary bicycle is compact enough to squeeze into tight spots all over the ship.

Many sailors in the Royal Canadian Navy are avid cyclists and dedicated athletes. As we keep our naval ships in fighting shape, our sailors must also focus on their own physical fitness. The Navy Bike Ride is an opportunity to highlight that commitment to health and wellness.

About the Royal Canadian Navy

The mission of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) is to generate combat-capable, multipurpose maritime forces that support Canada’s efforts to participate in security operations anywhere in the world, as part of an integrated Canadian Armed Forces.

The RCN fleet, divided between the Atlantic (Halifax, NS) and Pacific (Esquimalt, BC) coasts, is composed of 29 warships, submarines, and coastal defence vessels, plus many more auxiliary and support vessels. In addition, the Naval Reserve is headquartered in Québec City, QC, and consists of 24 Naval Reserve Divisions located in most major cities across the country.

What does your fundraising do?

Designed as a fun, family friendly event, the Navy Bike Ride (NBR) supports the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) community, with proceeds going to Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund, Support Our Troops, and Soldier On.

The funds raised as part of the NBR go to providing assistance to Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans, and their families. The fundraising done by NBR participants contributes to building family resilience, and to supporting the recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration of members with physical and/or mental health illness or injury, and supporting those who currently serve or have served our country.

Funds raised by the participants of the Navy Bike Ride support three organisations dedicated to the well-being of the Royal Canadian Navy’s current and former sailors and their families: the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund, Support Our Troops and Soldier On.

Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund

The Royal Canadian Benevolent Fund (RCNBF):  Since 1942, the RCNBF has upheld a long tradition of promoting the well-being of the naval community by providing financial assistance to serving and retired sailors and their families who experience hard times. They have expanded this endeavour by partnering with like-minded organizations and investing in impactful initiatives, such as service dogs for naval veterans (with Canadian Veteran Service Dog Unit), building a “navy” home for veterans (with the Homes for Heroes Foundation), and more.

Support Our Troops

Established in 2007, Support Our Troops meets the unique needs and special challenges faced by members of the Canadian Armed Forces community as a result of military service. It operates within Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services.

This includes providing financial assistance to promote family resiliency and supporting Veterans and serving members who may have an illness or injury through a variety of grants and programs.

Soldier On

Soldier On is a program that aims to support the recovery of ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and veterans by providing opportunities and resources through sport, recreational, and creative activities. Since its establishment in 2007, Soldier On has supported over 11,500 members within the CAF community by offering members a safe environment to challenge themselves and become inspired in ways that they may not have thought possible, contributing to and providing a gateway to enhance their well-being. This re-introduction to an active lifestyle provides opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence and meet peers with similar challenges.
